Week 9 Homework - Fiber Optic Testing

There are many different ways to test your fiber optic cables -- continuity testers, visual fault locators, optical return loss test sets, light source and optical power meters. In 1 page, detail each of these different testers.  Describe what each is testing for, along with possible causes for any degradation or discrepancies.  For instance, a continuity tester is a low-cost tool that allows you to quickly verify the continuity of an optical cable.  It is adept in testing for breaks, though it doesn’t have the power to determine the location of a break.

If you would prefer to present this as a list with bullets following each tester, that will be fine.

Week 8 Homework

Unit 7. Lab 1. New Building – Safety Plan

Safety on the job site is of the upmost priority.  Having a solid plan in place PRIOR to beginning work can help ensure everyone will be safe and the job will be completed successfully.

Consider the RFP you wrote for installing new systems, please write a 1-2 page discussion describing the following:

• Safety Plan, including safety rules for workers, necessary safety equipment, and standard procedures you would implement.
• Specify the top 10 regulations/specifications that you feel are most important (and justify why you feel that way)
• An emergency plan, in case something goes wrong

Again, I'm  not looking for completeness, but just the ability to show that you have a solid understanding of the safety concepts presented and (more importantly) the reasons behind them.

Week 5 Homework

For the coming week's homework, you will be creating a SIMPLE request for proposal (RFP). Please use the attached document as the basis for your RFP.

Assume you are expanding an existing office by 40 new users and 2 printers.

Write an RFP to hire a company to install the new cabling and required equipment.

SPE Project - MCNC Visit

Details and Logistics

Meet at MCNC as close to 6 PM as you can arrive. The address is 3021 E. Cornwallis Rd, RTP, NC.

We will be in Building 3. When you enter the parking lot, keep to the right and park behind the first building you come to.You will need to sign in with me and everyone will need to go through a safety briefing. Given the number of people, we may need to tour in two groups.

• Please bring something to jot notes on.
• You will not be allowed to take photographs
• If you have sensitive hearing, either bring your own earplugs, or use the disposable plugs offered.
• It may help to learn a little about MCNC ahead of time.

Assignment (DUE THE LAST WEEK OF CLASS)

You will be writing a paper on your observations during the visit. You may take one of two angles. 

Option 1.

Consider the three legged stool of networking - SPEED / RELIABILITY / SECURITY. What tools, processes, items that you observe are in use for delivering these qualities to the data center? If you were the CEO of a business, would you rely on the MCNC data center to host your systems? Why or Why not?

Option 2.

Remembering our discussion and homework on networking standards, which ones are most important in the MCNC data center? Which standards are being met? Where are they falling short? Describe specifics of places where a standard may or may not be met. 

IF You cannot make the visit with us:

Either arrange a visit on your own to another data center, or imagine that you are the CEO of a company that is looking for a new data center. Using one of the options above, explore what considerations you would make in choosing a provider.
